ξ FAA announced Indiana will not be one of the places testing drones for the federal government
ξ Indiana had entered a joint bid with Ohio hoping to land one of the testing sites, likely at Camp Atterbury
ξ FAA will use the six locations to develop policies for the drones,
ξ small unmanned vehicles that could be used for commercial purposes
ξ FAA announced six states that will develop test sites for drones,
ξ a critical next step for the march of the unmanned aircraft into U.S. skies.
ξ Alaska, Nevada, New York, North Dakota, Texas and Virginia will host the research sites.

ξ The Indiana Office of Defense Development responded to the FAA�s decision.
ξ �While we are disappointed with the FAA�s decision to not select the Indiana and Ohio
ξ UAS (Unmanned Air Systems) Center and Test Complex for designation as an FAA Test Site,
ξ Indiana and Ohio plan to continue moving forward with the Indiana and Ohio UAS Center
ξ and Test Complex and to capture the potential economic benefit of UAS activities.

ξ The Indiana and Ohio UAS Center will operate seven diverse test ranges throughout Indiana and Ohio
ξ to support state, local and federal governments as well as private companies and universities in their UAS research and development.
ξ The Indiana and Ohio UAS Center will continue to host the NASA Air Operations Challenge next April
ξ to demonstrate safely operating UAS in shared airspace with cooperative and uncooperative air traffic.
ξ The challenge is designed to promote safety technology such as sensing and avoiding other aircraft.�

»FAA Denies Proposed Indiana-Ohio Drone Testing Site
ξ The Indiana-based National Center for Complex Operations and
ξ the Ohio-based Unmanned Aerial Systems Center and Test Complex
ξ announced a partnership last year to bid for a federal designation as a test site for drone technology

ξ The six congressionally-mandated test sites chosen will conduct research into how unmanned vehicles can be safely incorporated into the national airspace over the next several years.

ξ Lia Reich is a spokesperson for Precision Hawk, an unmanned aerial systems and remote sensing company based in Noblesville, Indiana
ξ she said the decision having been disappointing from an economic standpoint but
ξ there to be a lot of research in the state that will continue despite not being chosen as an FAA test site
ξ �Universities are able to officially fly for research purposes so for the company to be able to partner with the universities here in the state
ξ that are well respected and well recognized and start to do a lot of specific research
ξ that will really prepare the state of Indiana for economic impact when the national airspace does open, hopefully in 2015,� Reich says.
