ξ Florida�s effort to diversify the economy with UAS suffered a setback when it was not named as one of six test sites by FAA
ξ the end of the space shuttle program devastated the Space Coast with high unemployment
ξ state officials have been working hard to diversity the area�s economy away from an over dependence on government
ξ Florida says to have a vast network of controlled airspace, simulation and research centers, skilled workforce, UAS curricula in its university systems
ξ FAA believed to having indicated continuing to work with sites that were not selected
ξ On May 9-11, 2014, Space Florida hosts an unmanned systems demonstration at Exploration Park (located at Kennedy Space Center),
ξ in conjunction with the AUVSI (Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems) Conference in Orlando.

Autonomous F-16 demonstrations
ξ Lockheed Martin Skunk Works
ξ the Air Force Research Laboratory
ξ U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School
ξ Calspan Corp.
ξ successfully flew an autonomous F-16 in two demonstrations
ξ took place at the Test Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base in California
ξ three key objectives:
ξ ability to autonomously plan and execute air-to-ground strike missions based on mission priorities and available assets
ξ ability to dynamically react to a changing threat environment during an air-to-ground strike mission
ξ while automatically managing contingencies for capability failures,
ξ route deviations and loss of communication; and
ξ a fully compliant USAF Open Mission Systems software integration environment
ξ allowing rapid integration of software components developed by multiple providers

ξ F-16 acting as a surrogate unmanned combat air vehicle
ξ carried out an air-to-ground strike mission during the demonstration
ξ had to autonomously react to what Lockheed Martin called a dynamic threat environment

ξ The first demo focused on advanced vehicle control
ξ F-16 autonomously flew in formation with a lead aircraft,
ξ conducted the attack mission and
ξ then automatically rejoined the lead aircraft after completion
ξ aircraft was linked with Lockheed Martin�s automatic collision avoidance system

ξ Shawn Whitcomb was Lockheed Martin Skunk Works Loyal Wingman program manager

The City of Lake Alfred and Lewis County,

West Virginia's:
The City of Weston,
WV are still in the runnings.

Having just finalized todays required submissions,
both cities are eligible to continue the vetting process as set forth by the FAA.
More importantly however both of these cities have developed actual measures
of developing quality UAS policy
which makes them safer, as well as targets of prosperity for the UAS industry!!!!

A special thanks to the City Managers, and
City Commissioners who have aided in making this a reality!
Not yet out of the woods, and we may very well Not get selected, but we are well under way!
