DARPA asks Raytheon BBN to develop new military computing battlefield network algorithms
$10 million contract to Raytheon BBN
for a research project under the Dispersed Computing (DCOMP) program
focuses on algorithms for dispersed mission-aware computation;
programmable nodes and
protocol stacks; and
technology integration

for network elements, radios, smart phones, or
sensors with programmable execution environments; and
portable micro-clouds of different form factors

reason: military users with significant computing requirements depend too much on access to large, shared data centers
the cost and latency can cause problems in different operational scenarios

DCOMP program seeks scalable decision systems
that enable secure, collective tasking of computing assets in a mission-aware fashion
by users with competing demands, and across large numbers of heterogeneous computing platforms,

must be able to operate in environments where network connectivity is variable and degraded,
and enable users to move code to data, and data to code
to suit users, applications, and mission needs best

goal to create programmable platforms networked computation points (NCPs)
that use DCOMP software

DARPA approaches industry for new battlefield network algorithms and network protocols

U.S. military researchers are asking industry for new algorithms and protocols for
large, mission-aware, computer, communications, and battlefield network systems
that physically are dispersed over large forward-deployed areas.

Officials of the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in Arlington, Va.,
issued a broad agency announcement (DARPA-BAA-16-41) for the Dispersed Computing project,
which seeks to boost application and network performance of dispersed computing architectures
by orders of magnitude with new algorithms and protocol stacks.

Examples of such architectures include network elements, radios, smart phones, or
sensors with programmable execution environments; and
portable micro-clouds of different form factors.

Today users with significant computing requirements typically have depended on access to
large, shared data centers to which they backhaul their images, video, or network log files for processing

the cost and latency of this backhaul sometimes can cause problems in different operational scenarios
-- especially when network throughput is severely limited or when the user application requires a near real-time response

In these conditions users could benefit from using taskable computing power that available locally.
The Dispersed Computing program seeks scalable decision systems
that enable secure, collective tasking of computing assets in a mission-aware fashion
by users with competing demands, and across large numbers of heterogeneous computing platforms,

IoT ecosystem expexted to expand significantly with new global standards from oneM2M
the global standard initiative for Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications and the IoT, published Release 2
builds on oneM2M’s initial set of official specifications,
which enable basic connectivity between applications and devices
open up the IoT ecosystem to devices that lack the protocol and
enable interworking among systems using AllSeen Alliance’s AllJoyn, Open Connectivity Foundation’s OIC, and
the Open Mobile Alliance’s Lightweight M2M (LWM2M).

the number of devices that can seamlessly connect with one other in the IoT ecosystem,
estimated by Cisco to number 50 Billion by 2020, is expected greatly to expand

the critical area of security has been addressed throughout the 17 specifications of Release 2,
by enabling end-to-end secure information exchange between any devices or servers,
as well as implementing attribute and role-based dynamic access control,
which allows the complexity of handling access control policies in consumer oriented IoT scenarios and
enables granting temporary authorization to devices during operation.

semantic interoperability enables meaningful data exchange for secure distribution and reuse
provides the unique value proposition of a single interworking platform for all enabled devices
according to Dr. Omar Elloumi, Chair of the oneM2M Technical Plenary, (Nokia corporate CTO group)
As IoT devices continue to saturate society,
standardization is key to achieving universally accepted specifications and protocols
for true interoperability between IoT devices and applications.

oneM2M’s Release 2 comes at the same time as IoT announcements from John Deere,
a farm equipment manufacturer, and Certuss Dampfautomaten, a German maker of steam generators
used for anything from cooking sausages to sterilizing medical instruments.
Their recent announcements discuss the enablement of home and industrial domain deployment
– another key feature of Release 2 which allows information from various industries’ applications to exchange data.
These mark significant momentum in the future state of a connected society.

application developers now have access to user-friendly APIs and guidelines,
complementing the global set of IoT standards for this critical group of stakeholders, and
further facilitating access to the official source of global,
IoT-application identifiers that comply with the oneM2M standard, the oneM2M App-ID registry.

already working on Release 3 as technology advancements don’t stand still

Space-Based ADS-B
ξ FAA and Aireon completed a flight test using space-based automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B) technology
ξ in the New York and Washington flight information regions.
ξ a total of 2,462 ADS-B messages were received and decoded,
ξ providing comparable data to that of terrestrial ADS-B stations.
ξ FAA’s specially equipped Bombardier airborne laboratory equipped was used
ξ with highly calibrated antennas, flight-data test equipment and recorders.
ξ N47 aircraft helped begin the evaluation and verification of the performance of the Aireon system,
ξ particularly in high interference and high density environments.
