Boreal, Wärtsilä Join Forces on Hydrogen-Powered Ferries
Ferry operator Boreal Sjø and technology group Wärtsilä
have reached an agreement to jointly work on developing hydrogen-powered ferries.

Under the deal, the parties said they would develop a hybrid hydrogen-electric ferry,
which would be powered by 50 percent hydrogen, and one fully electric ferry.

According to Boreal Sjø, the new ferry will be the first vessel of its size
ever operated by hydrogen in commercial operation.

The units are scheduled to be completed in 2021.
They are designated to operate on the Hjelmeland-Skipavik-Nesvik route in Norway.

The agreement is part of the Norwegian government’s plan
to be the first country to own a hydrogen-powered ferry.

Boreal Sjø and Wärtsilä are finalizing their final concept for the unit
and are expected to present their offer on the completed solution
to the Norwegian Public Roads Administration by August 2018.

The parties would be competing with two other companies for the Norwegian development contract.

Liquid Hydrogen Batteries for storing renawable energy
Development of a feasible hydrogen storage media is vitally needed globally and nationally.
The companies and research units are developing this together.

Liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs)
can be reversibly hydrogenated and dehydrogenated using catalysts and elevated temperatures,
resembling liquid hydrogen "batteries".

In the LOHCNESS project, the feasibility and performance of
the LOHC solutions will be evaluated aiming at
identifying the business possibilities and best uses around the LOHC concept,
finding efficient hydrogen release catalysts for the new proof-of-concept testing and
demonstrating the existing LOHC concept of Hydrogenious GmbH and the new set-up for hydrogen release.

Hydrogen can be industrial byproduct.

»Liquid hydrogen "batteries" for storing renewable energy, LOHCNESS
Liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs) are liquid hydrogen “batteries”,
which can be reversibly hydrogenated and dehydrogenated
using catalysts and elevated temperatures.
LOHCs would offer an energy storage solution,
which is compatible with the existing infrastructure for liquid fuels
with flexible storage times and capacities.
The LOHC concept could serve as storage of renewable electricity and energy
for demanding use in Finland, including energy sectors, residential use,
shipping and mobile applications.
In this project, the feasibility and performance of the LOHC solutions will be evaluated.
Practical information of the performance of the LOHC concept is generated,
particularly, in terms of the purity of hydrogen released and
the long-term durability of the LOHC fuel cell installation.
Project is also aiming at development of catalyst and components further.

Duration of project: 5/2017 - 4/2019
