Dragonfly

General:
~ dragonflies are ancient insects, they were around before the dinosaurs
~ a fossilized impression of a dragonfly wing, found in a coal mine in England, is the oldest known dragonfly specimen
~ this dragonfly lived 300 million years ago and had a wingspan of eight inches
~ the largest known dragonfly had a wingspan of 24 inches (two feet)
~ evolution has worked for hundreds of millions of years to improve the wing motion of dragonflies
~ it is obvious that the propulsive efficiency must be close to optimum
~ their capability of very rapid manoeuvres and
~ of great accelerations makes them very good hunters,
~ as their flight abilities are superior to that of any other large insect
~ Dragon-flies can move their four wings independently of each other,
~ and the motion of the wings has been optimised by evolution for more than 200 million years
~ It's high manoeuvrability and speed are making their wing motion an interesting subject for research

Dragonflies as pilots:
~ they not only fly fast, but also have excellent control over their maneuvers in midair
~ they do not travel aimlessly but rather know exactly where to go
~ dragonflies have two very big compound eyes, covering most of their heads
~ they see very well, so even the slightest movement will not escape them
~ as soon as they find a target, they track it down, scoop it up, and devour it
~ they complete the whole series of actions all while in flight !

Speed:
~ dragonflies are the fastest flying insects in the world
~ as they beat their four long, membranous wings vigorously, they can accelerate up to 60 miles per hour (=96km/h)!

Vision:
~ dragonflies possess such large eyes that no other insects can even come close to try to challenge the claim
~ they have a field of vision nearly 360 degrees!
