Why an Aero Diesel?
ξ general Aviation is facing a crisis in fuel availability and cost
ξ the current dominant fuel for piston-engine small aircraft, 100 LL (low lead), is the only leaded fuel manufactured in the world
ξ access to it is extremely limited outside the U.S. and Europe,
ξ and it is predicted to be unaffordable and/or totally unavailable globally by as early as 2010
ξ the existing small aircraft fleet will be crippled; in some countries it already is
ξ the U.S. Military has mandated the elimination of gasoline,
ξ with the goal of using jet fuel (or other "heavy fuels" such as diesel) for all of its engines by 2010
ξ one solution to the fuel dilemma is diesel-cycle engines,
ξ which also have other advantages over gasoline engines including durability and fuel savings

Thanks for writing.

ASTM D6751 spec biodiesel has not been approved for use in aviation and should not be used in such an application.

If you question arose from the recent Virgin Atlantic test flight,
it is our understanding that the fuel used was produced using a proprietary technology developed by Imperium Renewables
specifically for jet aircraft applications. This fuel was not ASTM D 6751 biodiesel.

The historic Virgin Airlines flight is an important step in exploring the potential use of biofuels in jet airplanes.
We look forward to the test results from this flight – as well as additional research and any necessary approvals –
that will provide more information regarding the use of biofuels as an alternative or blending stock for jet fuel.

While NBB is willing to answer any and all questions about D 6751 biodiesel,
we defer to Imperium Renewables to answer questions about the proprietary biofuel they provided for use in the flight
