Coal and nuclear energy
ξ for economic and energy supply safety reasons, use of coal and nuclear energy may increase within large-scale electricity and CHP production
ξ despite problems associated with both these energy sources

ξ Coal is the most abundant fossil energy source in world with reserves of around 1 x 1012 tons (1 trillion tons) distributed in many countries
ξ The largest coal reserves are found in the U.S., Russia, China, India and Australia
ξ Coal resources are estimated to last over 100 years at current demand
ξ if utilization of coal strongly increases with increasing demand in electricity and liquid fuels (e.g., in China),
ξ the reserve life of coal begins to drop dramatically
ξ Coal is mainly used for power and industrial sectors
ξ From 2003 to 2030, coal for industrial energy more than triples in China
ξ China and India will account for more than two thirds of the increase in global coal use
