»Hydrogen from Algae
ξ hydrogen exists within certain algae
ξ if one can effectively manipulate those microorganism processes, one can capture solar energy directly in a form that is an ideal transportation fuel = LH2
ξ algal photosynthesis and hydrogen production are sister processes
ξ both start with the same solar-energy-activated splitting of water to oxygen, electrons, and protons;
ξ protons and electrons then go to a second enzymatic reaction
ξ in one case, the “normal” second reaction fixes carbon dioxide to produce sugar,
ξ in the other, an alternative reaction produces hydrogen molecules

Basic Studies of Photosynthesis
ξ the process of plant photosynthesis produces the oxygen we breathe, the food we eat, and important materials for our houses, clothes, and industries
ξ in the future, it will also provide plant biomass for our fuel and
ξ more of our chemical needs through a process called "photoconversion"
ξ through photoconversion, these products will be renewable and non-polluting, and
ξ they won't contribute to global warming
ξ scientists in his group are working to understand the detailed mechanism of that part of the photosynthetic process associated with photosystem II,
ξ which provides the energy and reductant required by plants to grow
ξ this particular process uses sunlight to split water molecules and supplies us with oxygen (which to the plant is waste product)
ξ research has visualized the protein structure that performs these basic processes and
ξ has measured the extremely fast photochemical reactions (in trillionths of a second!) that drive these processes
ξ this understanding may someday help us improve the efficiency of natural photosynthesis and
ξ design artificial photosynthetic processes as next-generation systems to produce renewable energy

Algal BioHydrogen Research
ξ engaged in basic and applied research aimed at understanding the biochemistry and molecular biology of hydrogenases (algal biocatalysts that release H2 gas);
ξ the genomics and global metabolic pathways of the model organism, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii,
ξ that we have been using in BioHydrogen research; and
ξ processes and bioreactor systems in support of future algal, BioHydrogen-photoproduction system
