Yves Rossy
ξ 2003 flew 12 kilometres for the loss of just 3000 metres of altitude,
ξ achieving his feat by jumping out of plane wearing three metre, carbon fibre wings
ξ the former military pilot, 45
ξ flies Airbuses for Swissair
ξ spent five years developing his wings for his flying man project
ξ went one better with his 'jet-man' project by adding two kerosene-powered jet engines to his original wing design
ξ became the first man to fly like a bird: horizontally

2008

Swiss man flies over English Channel on jet-propelled wing ! /USA Today/
ξ had nothing above him but four tanks of kerosene
ξ nothing below him but the cold waters of the English Channel
ξ leapt from a plane and into the record books on 26th September, 2008 crossing the channel on a homemade jet-propelled wing
ξ jumped from the plane about 2,500 meters (8,200 feet) over Calais, France
ξ blasted across the narrow body of water and deployed his parachute over the South Foreland lighthouse
ξ backed by a gentle breeze crossed the Channel in 13 minutes
ξ averaged 200 kilometers (125 miles) per hour
ξ did a figure eight as he came over England, although the wind blew him away from his planned landing spot next to the lighthouse.
ξ "It was perfect. Blue sky, sunny, no clouds, perfect conditions," the Swiss pilot said after touching down in an adjacent field
ξ he wanted to show, "it is possible to fly, a little bit, like a bird."
ξ he had watched passenger ferries cutting a path between the Britain and France as he tore through the air
ξ "I was happy to be faster than them," he said.
ξ The 49-year-old said the Channel crossing was the realization of a dream.
ξ "That's the most gratifying thing you can do," he said.

ξ Rossy's trip — twice delayed due to bad weather — was meant to trace the route of French aviator Louis Bleriot,
ξ the first person to cross the narrow body of water in an airplane 99 years ago.
ξ The South Foreland Lighthouse was the site of Guglielmo Marconi's experiments with radio telegraphy in 1898.
ξ Bleriot used the white building as a target during his pioneering flight

Rossy's wing
ξ made from carbon composite.
ξ weighs about 121 pounds (55 kilograms) when loaded with fuel and carried four kerosene-burning jet turbines.
ξ the contraption has no steering devices
ξ Rossy, a commercial airline pilot by training, wiggled his body back and forth to control the wing's movements.
ξ He wore a heat-resistant suit similar to that worn by firefighters and racing drivers to protect him from the heat of the turbines.
ξ The cooling effect of the wind and high altitude also prevented him from getting too warm.
»Rocket man flies to 8,200ft
ξ "It's like a second skin. If I turn to the left, I fly left. If I nudge to the right, I go right."

ξ Mark Dale, the senior technical officer for the British Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association, described Rossy's flight as a "fabulous stunt."
ξ Rossy, who spent months preparing for the cross-Channel flight, has said he wants to fly across the Grand Canyon in Arizona next.
ξ As for the 13 lonely minutes he spent aloft between England and France, he assured reporters he felt no fear.
ξ "I was under tension. But fear? The day I fear, I don't go," Rossy said.

»Jet man ready for cross-Channel attempt after 'awesome' test flight, Guardian Science
ξ completed a successful 36km test flight over Switzerland
ξ the flight proved that his jet-powered wing can take him far enough to make it across the channel from Calais to Dover
ξ jumped from a plane above the Swiss town of Bex
ξ reached speeds of up to 180mph during his 12 minutes of jet-powered flight before landing at an airfield in Villeneuve
ξ Rossy first unveiled his jet-powered wing in May with an 8-minute aerobatic display over the Alps.
ξ "Everything went well, it was awesome," said Rossy after the flight.
ξ "It's my longest flight with this wing. If there are no technical problems, it's OK for the English Channel.
ξ I can't wait for this next challenge!"

His attempt had originally been thwarted by a collection of technical failures including
ξ a leaking gas tank
ξ two aborted flights during which the engines stopped within seconds of jumping from his support plane
ξ He blamed these failures – which forced him to deploy his parachutes early – on "electronic interference problems".

The successful flight
ξ involved him jumping out of the aircraft at 2,300m,
ξ flying horizontally under jet power from a height of 1,700m and then
ξ switching off the jet engines before deploying two parachutes at 1500m and 1200m.

The wing
ξ does not include moving parts such as flaps to control direction
ξ Rossy is able to steer by shifting his weight and moving his head

When he reached the ground
ξ he still had 2 litres of fuel left in his wing
ξ that suggested he would have some margin for error during the cross-channel flight

At 7:30pm on June 24, 2004
ξ dropped from 4000m over the Yverdon airfield
ξ after opening the wings, he glided to 2500m, ignited the engines and
ξ waited 30 seconds for them to be able to stabilize and begins to open the throttle
ξ At 16m, he achieved horizontal flight for more than 4 minutes at 100 knots (115 mph)
ξ "It was absolutely fantastic; freedom in three dimensions...I felt like a bird."
ξ soared over the Alps at 180km/h
ξ to perfect the performance, the aerodynamic wings were improved and their span was increased to 3 meters

Because there was a loss of rigidity due to the inflatable side of the wings
ξ had to stop his collaboration with "Prospective Concepts",
ξ who made the original design, and
ξ work only with "ACT Composites" who then created foldable carbon wings, able to be used from a Pilatus Porter plane

Handles
ξ were fixed onto the wings so that Yves could electronically manipulate the wingtips
ξ this giving him the freedom to decide when he wanted to either glide or dive

These new wings were tested quite a few times
ξ with different weights on them so as to see how and where the kerosene port and engines would be placed

Many simulations
ξ were tested before being able to fix on the real engines and most importantly before being ignited

2002
ξ contacted the worlds leading model jet engine Company »Jet-Cat, Germany
ξ company specialises in motorising miniature planes
ξ quickly showed its interest to help Yves install engines onto his wings
ξ many tests were made with different engines, different air intakes
ξ they even had to test at altitudes reaching 4000 m as these particular engines had never been tested before at such an altitude

A test team was taken up in a Pilatus Porter
ξ so that fine-tuning could be made until the engines worked perfectly at high altitude
ξ once all ignition tests had been done at ground level,
ξ the real thing was ready to be done, but like all prototype experiments, success is certainly not guaranteed on the first trial

Anything is possible
ξ ignition failure,
ξ ignition of only one engine,
ξ flight instability
ξ even spinning is possible
ξ all of these failure tests were made during the long testing sessions
ξ after running in to turbulence Yves cut off the two engines despite having half full tanks at the time
