~ Airports sold to fund hospitals

ξ Premier Anna Bligh told state parliament that by the end of the year 2008 the Government would sell the Cairns and Mackay airports,
ξ along with the Port of Brisbane Corporation's shareholding in the Brisbane Airport Corporation.
ξ "With the funds of this major sale, we will expand and redevelop the Cairns Base Hospital,
ξ buy a site for a future Cairns hospital,
ξ build a new Mackay Base Hospital on its current site and redevelop Mount Isa Hospital," Ms Bligh said.
ξ "It is vital we redirect the airport sale funds back into these geographically important hospitals.
ξ "Cairns, Mackay and Mount Isa continue to face increased demand with their continually growing populations."
ξ Ms Bligh said preliminary estimates suggested total capital spending for Cairns, Mackay and Mount Isa hospitals
ξ would be in the order of more than $900 million
ξ She said market interest in the airports and the 12 per cent share in Brisbane Airport Corporation was anticipated to be "very high".
ξ The Premier was confident the sale would deliver the funds needed to pay for the new infrastructure.
ξ "With this sale, the Queensland Government will effectively move out of the airport business altogether," Ms Bligh said.
ξ Treasurer Andrew Fraser said the assets had a book value of around $800 million.
ξ "We expect that the private sector will pay well above that value to secure the chance to invest in Queensland's future prospects," he said.
